Are you one of those lucky people who have broadband access, and want to play GTA online? This section gives a detailed view on how to create and join Internet games for the GTA series.
ADSL is the up and coming Broadband access in the UK. To check your exchange for availability check the BT ADSL site.
The hosting player needs to provide the clients (people who are joining) their IP address. Make sure you have an active connection to the Internet and follow these instructions:
Start | Run... | (type in) winipcfg.exe | <ENTER>
A small window will open revealing detailed information on your Internet connection. The number you are interested in is your 'IP Address'. Give this number to all the other players. Remember this will probably change every time you connect to the Internet (depending on your connection type), so it is best to check your IP Address before every game.
NB: If you have a network card, or other dial-up devices make sure you have the correct one selected in the drop down list.
Both my IP Address and my Subnet Mask show 0.0.0.0. This means that I don't have an active connection to the Internet. If you get this make sure you have an active connection (try looking at a web page) and then re-open the program.
The procedures for online gamin in Grand-Theft-Auto, GTA:L (69 & 61) and all the same.
Start a Windows 95 game of GTA, with the CD in.
You cannot join and leave the game like you can in Quake II and Half-Life. The game will start when the server hits enter (needs at least one over player). There are a few bugs in GTA, and the game can sometimes get out of sync while playing multiplayer.
The Cannonball games are races. There are 4 cars you can pick, and each player has to battle their driving skills out racing through the city.

Start a Windows 95 game of GTA. The CD is not needed.

To create a GTA2 game load the GTA2 Manager and select the Network pannel. Make sure "Internet TCP/IP Connection For DirectPlay" is selected and the "Protocol Connection" box is empty. To start the game server click on "Start Network Game".
The game will now load (NB: You need the CD in), it may take some time, be patient, don't click the button again. Once presented with the next window, click on "Create". You will now be presented with the game server window.
Select the level you want to play, along with the number of people you want to play on the level (you can't start the game until that number of players have joined).
Select the game type. Frag: Kill to win. Points: Most points to win. Tag: Take a guess.
If you choose to select cops, it isn't as good as on single player. You can only have one level of cops, so there is no stealing SWAT vans, or Tanks.
Once everybody has joined the "Start" button will be enabled. Click this to start the game. You will be put straight into the game. If you find you can't move at first this is because the other players are still joining.
Once in the game it is a lot like single player, although there are no gangs, so you don't have to worry about respect. Although there are no gangs it is possible to get an "Instant Gang". Walk over a respect symbol and you will get 4 body guards who will assist you in killing your opposition.
Remember this game is not like Quake 2 or Half-Life. People can't just join and leave at any point. Everybody has to be in ready before the server clicks start. If somebody leaves the game then they cannot join in again until the next game.

If you can't start straight away it is because the other players are still joining into the game.
There isn't any. Why? Ask the man himself:
Dan Houser:
We felt we made massive advances in the design of 3D single-player action in Grand Theft Auto III. Attitude, characterization, immersiveness, and the seamless combination of driving, gunplay, and running about in a fully developed world while following a nonlinear story. We always felt the multiplayer versions failed to do justice to the single-player games in previous iterations of Grand Theft Auto, and now that the game is in 3D, we thought this would only be exacerbated by the completeness of the single-player game. With a multiplayer version of the game, we want to do something more than just a deathmatch mode in order to stay true to what the game concept is all about. It is going to take a long time to get this perfected.
