Region free KiSS DP-450
I have had a KiSS DP-450 DVD Player. This has been a long serving toy for me. The first DVD player capable of playing DivX and XviD files.
The only down side to this DVD player was the fact that it still restricted what region DVD you can play. Region 2 here. Rather annoying, and something that KiSS have no plans of changing in a later firmware updates. Something that I always considered very odd as they support being able to download films of the Internet and playing them (really, why else would you have DivX).
Although the wonderful world of the Internet gave us a guy going by the name of Hijacker, with a guide on making it region free. Although one thing is the firmware limits the speed. I don't think this is something that he has done deliberately but a side-effect of making it region free.
The actual DVD-ROM drive in the DP-450 (well, in mine) is a Toshiba SD-M1712. Another thing this same guy has done is crack this drive to region-free with full speed on it.
So, the solution to the problem is to put the cracked Toshiba firmware on it. Hey presto. How to do this?
1. Download the Toshiba SD-M1712 firmare.
2. Eject the drive on your DP-450 and turn it off
3. Pop the top off your KiSS DP-450
4. Unscrew the DVD-ROM unit and slide it out
5. Plug the unit into your PC
6. Boot up on into DOS (NOT Windows), and run the driver update you downloaded.
7. Put the drive back into your KiSS
8. Turn it on. Press: Eject - Clear - 2 - 7 - 6
9. Hey presto Region menu at the bottom (select all)
Make sure you also have a good firmware running on the drive. It seems that version 2.7.4 is good.
I had an odd problem with the drive whistling. To solve this just reset it by pressing: Eject - Clear - 1 - 2 - 3.
