Age Discrimination
We have recruited two trainee developers at work recently. When this was announced I thought there was something odd about the title they were given, but perhaps that was just because I've been working on a project where nobody uses their real job title...
No, that's it. Trainee means that they don't know how to program, I know at least one of them does. Shouldn't they be called junior developers? Ah yes, they were. But apparently our HR department in it's omniscience decided that calling somebody junior was against the recently introduced age discrimination act.
Although they are quite happy to call senior developers just that. And, in fact, the rest of the company with senior jobs... it drives me slightly mad that people are paid to come up with these things.
I expect the next move will be to change all the people with senior in the title to 'advanced' or something. Can't say experienced, as that's indicating that the person may have been in the job for some time. It's all along with the fact that interviewers are no longer allowed to ask how much experience somebody has in a roll, as it's discriminatory against young people.
So, I've started going about writing the proverbial "Hello World" application in every language I can think of, and putting it on my CV as working with that language.
